Here are some additional blood collection tips should you struggle to collect the sample.

  • Samples should be collected on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only and returned the same day.
  • Blood should be collected early in the morning
  • Ensure that your hands are warmed thoroughly before beginning
  • If you have hard skin on your fingers, soak them in a bowl of warm water first to soften the skin.
  • It is often a good idea if you can have someone help you.
  • If there isn’t anyone else around it is also a good idea to place the tube in the foam insert that comes in the box – this will hold the tube in place for you and it is one less thing for you to worry about.
  • Before taking your sample, drop your arm down by your side to allow the blood to travel to your fingertips.
  • Keep massaging from your elbow to your fingers as if you are pushing the blood to your fingers. It is important however not to press too hard on your finger tips as this can sometimes cause the blood to clot.
  • Before you pierce the finger please make sure your hand has been down by your side for a short period of time to have allowed the blood to gather.
  • Pierce your finger at the tip (to the right or left of the tip not necessarily the middle). The baby finger is also good for blood flow.
  • Wipe away the first drop of blood and massage from your wrist through to the tip of your finger, a drop will form and will flow into the tube.
  • Repeat this process.
  • The tube must be filled to the top.
  • If you receive extra lancets, you can try fingers on both hands if you wish.
  • It is also very important to drink plenty of water prior to collecting your samples- drink plenty of water before beginning.
  • If you find one hand is not working for you, switch hands as there is can be better blood flow.
  • If you find the blood is coming out quite slowly you could try running your hands underneath warm running water for up to 5 minutes as this can also help.
  • Step 1: Wash your hands in warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly. Warm your hands before proceeding to step 2.
  • Step 2: The best location for collecting is the ring finger or baby finger on your non-dominant hand.
  • Step 3: Using the pre injection swab provided, clean the selected finger, then dry with a clean tissue.
  • Step 4: Remove one of the lancets from the bag, twist and remove the blue stick from the bottom. The lancet is now ready to use.
  • Step 5: Make sure to stand up while collecting the blood sample. Position the lancet against the tip of your finger and press down firmly. Should you need to repeat, use a new lancet.
  • Step 6: After piercing the skin, a small drop will form. wipe away the first drop of blood with a clean tissue.
  • Step 7: Hold your hand/arm downwards and massage your hand and fingers to form a new drop of blood. Do not squeeze the tip of your finger or the blood will clot.
  • Step 8: Please fill the blood tube to the black line or above, or apply the blood drip to the dried spot circle.
  • Step 9: For tube collection, place the lid on the tube, and gently invert it 5-10 times.
  • Step 10: Place the tube or blood spot into the bio-hazard bag. Place the bio-hazard bag into the white box provided. Please ensure that you fill in the inner lid sticker first and then return the sample to the lab using the prepaid envelope provided.
  • Please ensure the blood collection tube is filled to the very top. If you do not provide an adequate sample, you will not receive a result.
